Maryland Ridesharing

The most economical way to commute is just a phone call away.

Why drive alone? Carpooling, vanpooling or using mass transit may be the most cost-saving move you could ever make!

Thousands of commuters use ridesharing as a means of reducing their current commuting costs. Additionally, they reduce the stress and tension of daily commuting by having friendly conversation among pool members, reading the newspaper or catching a few winks before or after work.

The Maryland Transit Administration's (MTA) Commuter Assistance Office, or your local ridesharing coordinator, can show you how to cut your commuting expenses with several different ridesharing options to suit YOUR commuting needs.

And there is no charge or obligation to you.

Carpooling can save you hundreds of dollars a year.

Carpooling can save you on the cost of gasoline, maintenance, repairs, insurance, parking, tolls and depreciation.

And carpooling can be as flexible as you want it to be. You can share a ride with one other person or several ? every day or only on certain days. Sharing a ride with just one person cuts your commuting costs in half!

To obtain more information on carpools near you, call your local ridesharing coordinator or the MTA`s Commuter Assistance Office, or complete and return the attached application. Within a week you will receive a list of up to 20 names and phone numbers of commuters who live and work near you and who share the same travel times. (Home address and place of employment will not appear on anyone's list.) Then, call the people on your list, make your best commuting arrangement, and you are on your way to carpooling!

Information on Park&Ride lots and special parking provisions for carpools and vanpools is also available from the MTA or your local ridesharing coordinator.

Vanpools are much like carpools, but on a larger scale.

Vanpools normally carry from 12 to 15 people, each sharing the commuting costs. The number of passengers, length of trip, insurance, maintenance, gas and parking fees determine the actual cost. The driver rides free and has personal use of the van on evenings and weekends. Vanpools provide a low?cost, safe and convenient way to Commute.

The MTA's Commuter Assistance Office or your local ridesharing coordinator can help you organize a vanpool, or find a place in an existing vanpool.

Mass transit may prove to be the most economical and convenient solution for your commuting needs.

Your local ridesharing coordinator or the MTA's Commuter Assistance Office can provide you with information on bus, light rail, Metro subway, and MARC train service. In addition, the MTA has park and ride lot information in your area.
