MARC Ticketing Policies
(Last Updated 12/2008)

Ticket Inspections

Passengers must allow conductors or any authorized representative to inspect all tickets or cash fare receipts upon request.  Tickets must be removed from any carrying case if requested by the conductor and, if presented after date of expiration, must be surrendered.  Passengers without valid tickets are subject to removal from train.

Ticket Forfeiture

Alteration or mutilation of any ticket, or obtaining a ticket deceptively for the purpose of fraudulent transportation will result in forfeiture of ticket.

Lost or Damaged Tickets

Lost, stolen, or damaged MARC tickets are neither refunded nor replaced.  Do not laminate your MARC ticket since this process will destroy the ticket.

Refunds

One-way tickets are non-refundable.  Weekly tickets are refundable if returned no later than 11:59 PM the Friday prior to the effective week.  Monthly tickets are refundable, based on calendar days, as follows:

  • Prior to effective month = 100%
  • Days 1 – 5 = 75%
  • Days 6 – 10 = 50%
  • Remainder of the month = 0%

For refunds and additional information please call MTA Customer Service at 410–767-3999 or 410-539-3497 (TTY) during business hours.

Extension of Tickets
Passengers holding weekly or monthly tickets wishing to travel to a point beyond their ticketed zone destination must pay the appropriate one-way, or two-trip fare from their ticketed destination zone to their new destination.  Passengers holding one-way or two-trip tickets may pay the difference in fare between their ticketed and actual destination.  No penalty will be charged for tickets extended aboard trains.

Cross Honoring on Amtrak Trains

MARC monthly and weekly tickets may be use on certain Amtrak trains.

1.  MARC passengers can use monthly (including TLC tickets) and weekly tickets, on days that MARC operates, on Amtrak trains shown in the current MARC timetable.  Travel is restricted to the points indicated by the footnotes in the timetable.  Please note that many trains have restrictions on what city pairs MARC tickets are accepted.  Tickets must also be of the same or longer destinations to be honored.  For example, a Washington-Edgewood ticket is not good between Washington and Aberdeen.  Please note that Amtrak train 151 will not accept MARC passengers at Penn Baltimore or BWI, regardless of the origin of the ticket.

2.  MARC monthly and weekly ticket holders may ride select Amtrak Reserved Regional trains that operate Monday through Friday on days that MARC operates.  No additional step up fee is required.  This rule presently applies to Amtrak trains 137, 151, 181, 85, 148, and 188.

3.  On weekends and before and after MARC service hours on weekdays, MARC monthly and weekly passes are good on certain Amtrak reserved Regional trains for no additional charge.  Monthly and weekly tickets are not valid on Metroliner or Acela Express trains, reserved Regional trains 87, 135, 152, 156, 192 & 194; or any trains operating outside of the MARC Penn Line service area.

Cross-Honoring on Virginia Railway Express (VRE) Trains

MARC tickets are accepted on southbound VRE trains departing from Washington before noon and on northbound trips returning to Washington after noon.
